Dear (none)Designer,
Welcome back to the fifty-third Design at Scale™ Newsletter – where we explore innovation and how design sparks real change in large organisations and agencies.
Today, we will discuss how organisations can move past design system implementation. We will also cover how to create an integrated design ecosystem and the impact this shift has within your organisation.
You have built or adopted a tokenised design system that works with third-party solutions. Now, a new challenge arises: how can you expand and scale beyond your organisation’s boundaries?
Agencies often claim that deploying solutions on client sites can create disadvantages, such as introducing operational challenges. These challenges may include tracking communications across multiple channels and managing duplicate efforts in regions where teams are mirroring each other's work.
Moving from a design system to a design ecosystem marks a big step in organisational design maturity. Agencies may seem more advanced because they have less administrative overhead. However, in practice, large organisations often lead in ecosystem integration and managing regulations.
During our interviews, we found that businesses in the multimedia, newspaper, broadcast, finance, transportation, and logistics sectors are more advanced in technology than their agencies of record.
Most agencies believe their ability to rapidly adapt expertise between clients provides them with unique insights and a competitive advantage, as they witness multiple implementations across industries.
This leads to a misconception: many large organisations struggle with integration, not with building new systems. The primary challenge is integrating new initiatives into the existing ecosystem.
This is why agencies without integration capabilities should partner with experts. These partnerships are often beneficial, though agency overconfidence can hinder work with internal teams.
Once a design ecosystem is deployed, everyone experiences rapid, transformative change. Both creativity and technology thrive on a unified digital foundation.
