Y22 Nº032 GRID Mag – Personal Finance at Scale

Dear (none)Designer,

Welcome back to the thirty-second Design at Scale™ Newsletter – focusing on innovation and how design drives change in a large organisation or an agency.

When I first discovered Ramit Sethi's book, I'll Make You Rich, in early 2010, it was not because I was interested in finance; it was because there was a system of organising the very transparent money.

The purpose of this article is not to do a review of the book and rephrase what Rami is teaching. He is truly a celebrity in his own right, and there is no need to repeat the message. However interesting it is that, decades later, these little financial habits allow me to organise my personal finances as well as support my big dream, which is to serve other designers to achieve their (design) dreams.

Fun aside, it is about the money. We all have some sort of income. Full-time, part-time, contract, or freelance – there is some money coming in. Once the money arrives, 10% goes to investment. Whether you are paid $ 100,000, $ 10,000, or $ 1,000, the 10% goes automatically to an investment account, where the funds are redistributed across low, medium, and high-risk assets.

Now we have available 90%.
30% goes to the necessities of life. Accommodation (mortgage), rent, all utility bills and food. Not that much you can do about it. Every society needs a piece, and to live where you want to live, you need to give in.

This leaves us with 60%
The following 30% goes back to business. Let me clarify, as this might be unthinkable for some returning 30% to business. If you are an employee and you're trying to get an extra income or build your dream business, you need to start somewhere. I started with a 10% monthly income as a full-time employee and gradually increased it to 30% on average. This cost covers all operational budget – servers, domains, tools and services, including marketing and lately even a social media manager. This way, I know that there is a fixed amount that I invest for the future.
This 30% monthly allowance allows me to scale one of many products that are now available to other designers. And as you are here now, this money drives Design at Scale™. The Method, GRID Magazine, Supply and most importantly, the Design at Scale™ Academy.

This leaves us with the remaining 30%
As a passionate traveller and cyclist, I share some of these funds and plan cycling competitions around the world. Not all of it, and not all the time. Usually, I set the money aside for further investment in buying my own space.

Now, you might ask why I am sharing this? For simplicity. One of the greatest things that Rami has been repeating for over a decade now, and I profoundly agree, is the simplicity of the model. This model also serves in start-ups that I founded and successfully exited.

In the end, it worked for me. Grab Ramit Sethi's book, I'll Make You Rich, to get your extra dose of personal finance.
