Terms & Definitions

Because terminology varies widely across organisations, this section establishes a shared vocabulary for Design at Scale™. The aim is to unify how Business, Design, and Development talk about delivery, impact, and the systems that support them.

What Is Design?

Design as Expression

Design historically communicated ideas through visual outcomes - posters, diagrams, typography, layouts. These artefacts expressed cultural, emotional, and informational intent, shaping how societies understood meaning.

Design as Function

Design also serves a functional purpose. Architectural plans, engineering drawings, circuit diagrams, workflows, and wireframes reduce risk by making intent explicit before anything is built. These documents sit at the core of traditional stage-and-gate (waterfall) systems and help diverse teams align.

Design in Business

Today, design extends far beyond aesthetics. It’s a strategic discipline that structures value across the entire business model — products, services, experiences, operations, and brand. Business design ensures every element of the organisation intentionally supports user needs and commercial outcomes.

Design in Development

In engineering, design bridges the requirements and implementation. It defines system architecture, constraints, feasibility, manufacturability, scalability, maintainability, and security. It translates user intent into precise technical plans that guide developers toward the correct solution.

Design as Process (Iterative)

Design across all disciplines follows an iterative cycle:
— Define the problem
— Generate solutions
— Analyse and select
— Detail the design
— Prototype and test
— Refine and improve

This cycle repeats until the solution meets user needs, business constraints, and technical feasibility.

What Is Scale?

In this context, “scale” refers to an organisation’s ability to expand capability, impact, and value without losing clarity, coherence, or quality. It moves design teams from a linear, manufacturing mindset into an exponential model driven by systems, learning, and repeatability.

Individual Scale Principles

These principles amplify personal capacity through:
— Self-awareness
— Habits and mindset
— Mental models
— Personal responsibility
— Growth discipline

They form the foundations of leadership and long-term performance.

Professional Scale Principles

Professional scale is the outward application of skill - how effectively someone operates in complexity. It includes:
— Translating ambiguity into opportunity
— Understanding and shaping value propositions
— Systems thinking
— Persuasion and stakeholder alignment
— Prioritisation and execution

This determines whether a designer’s thinking has organisational impact.

Team Scale

Team scale focuses on how individuals function together - clarity of roles, rituals, communication, documentation, and shared mental models. High-performing teams scale through trust, cadence, and consistent knowledge transfer.

Organisation Scale

Organisation scale is how design integrates across departments such as product, engineering, operations, research, and marketing. It includes governance, decision rights, hiring, onboarding, operating models, and design systems that create consistency at scale.

Business Scale

Business scale is the ability to turn design into a measurable advantage, aligning product strategy, customer value, operational efficiency, and commercial goals. Here, design becomes a strategic multiplier rather than a delivery function.

Exponential Scale

Exponential scale occurs when systems reinforce themselves. Design teams create reusable frameworks, knowledge bases, and operating patterns that compound over time. As insight and structure accumulate, delivery becomes faster, clearer, and higher-quality - without additional effort.

Design at Scale™ is defined by three models, which form the Method. Each model operates in a different part of the business and collects and informs parties on design and engineering decisions that have a direct impact on the delivery.

All brands and trademarks presented on the Design at Scale™ website are owned by their relevant companies or agencies. The projects represent collaborations between designers, developers and product owners. Do not copy or publish any of the projects shown here without written approval from Design at Scale™ (alternatively GIVE™, 9V™) and/or relevant companies and agencies.
