The IDEO Model

Featured Image

IDEO made human-centred design a global movement. Its approach begins and ends with people. Their behaviours, frustrations, and aspirations. And turns those insights into products, services, and systems that feel intuitive and alive.

Observation is the entry point. Designers immerse themselves in users’ worlds, spotting pain points and hidden opportunities. From there, ideation expands the field: divergent thinking produces many possibilities before focus returns to what matters most.

Rapid prototyping follows. Rough sketches and quick models make ideas tangible early, inviting feedback while it still counts. User testing closes the loop, replacing assumptions with empathy verified in action. Iteration is constant: test, learn, refine, repeat.

IDEO’s genius is cultural as much as methodological. It reframed creativity as a team sport - diverse minds working side-by-side, guided by optimism and curiosity.

By balancing desirability, feasibility, and viability, the IDEO model gave design its modern triad and inspired countless organisations to humanise innovation.

The result isn’t a process you follow once, but a mindset you adopt forever: design that listens first, builds second, and learns always.

In the lineage of Design at Scale™, IDEO’s legacy is clear - it proved that empathy could be industrialised without losing its soul.

Design at Scale™ is defined by three models, which form the Method. Each model operates in a different part of the business and collects and informs parties on design and engineering decisions that have a direct impact on the delivery.

All brands and trademarks presented on the Design at Scale™ website are owned by their relevant companies or agencies. The projects represent collaborations between designers, developers and product owners. Do not copy or publish any of the projects shown here without written approval from Design at Scale™ (alternatively GIVE™, 9V™) and/or relevant companies and agencies.
