Design Debt

Featured Image

Design debt is the silent weight in every large product organisation. Multiple Miro boards, FigJam files, Mural files, and Figma drafts live across personal drives, shared folders, and forgotten archives. They rarely speak to each other. They rarely evolve. They accumulate.

Scott McNealy, founder of Sun Microsystems, championed the idea that “The Network is the Computer.” His vision for networked computing - long before cloud platforms emerged - was centred on shared, accessible, centrally managed information.

Yet decades later, the mental model of “my local files” persists. Designers store terabytes of work across laptop drives, Dropbox folders, Google Drive spaces, and fragmented Figma workspaces. The cloud becomes nothing more than a bigger filing cabinet.

This undermines the power of shared knowledge.

DaS™ treats data structures as living organisms. Confluence and Jira allow teams to track decisions, monitor evolution, and reuse intellectual property accumulated over two decades and 80+ organisations. They enable designers to draw from historic research, experience maps, design systems (some dating back to 2003), and integration patterns.

BOK — Design Debt

Could OneDrive, Notion, Google Drive, Trello, or Monday.com do the same? Partially. But the industry standard for product teams is Jira - and that is why we committed early to mastering the Atlassian toolchain.

A unified toolchain is not a preference. It’s the only antidote to design debt at scale.

Happy scaling through design!

Design at Scale™ is defined by three models, which form the Method. Each model operates in a different part of the business and collects and informs parties on design and engineering decisions that have a direct impact on the delivery.

All brands and trademarks presented on the Design at Scale™ website are owned by their relevant companies or agencies. The projects represent collaborations between designers, developers and product owners. Do not copy or publish any of the projects shown here without written approval from Design at Scale™ (alternatively GIVE™, 9V™) and/or relevant companies and agencies.
