Fixed Time, Resources, Scope & Quality Management
Both Agile and Waterfall operate with fixed time, pre-planned resources, and expected quality - while keeping scope variable. The unpredictability of scope is challenging because humans struggle with exponential thinking. We prefer linear, predictable progress.
Exponential Thinking
Incremental steps are intuitive. Exponential steps are not. When organisations demand fixed scope within fixed time, teams instinctively resist - because they are being asked to predict the unpredictable.

Constraint 1: Fixed Budget
A fixed budget narrows decision-making to what is visible and quantifiable. When Product Owners lock scope early, teams hesitate to commit. Without clear preconditions - guidelines, users, problems - the expectation becomes unrealistic: “Deliver X screens in Y time.”
Constraint 2: Inadequate Resourcing
One designer in a ten-person product team is still common. This designer is expected to handle:
— Research
— UX
— UI
— Copy
— Interaction
— Visual design
— Design QA
— Documentation
— Stakeholder communication
All while keeping pace with engineering. Under-resourcing is not a talent issue - it’s a structural one.
Constraint 3: Lack of Clarity (PiD / Brief)
Across a sample of 5,000 designers, 90% reported that their PiD or brief lacked:
— a clear problem statement
— explicit objectives
— success measures
Without these, design and engineering become sailors at sea without a destination: busy, but directionless.
