From Maturity to Agility

Featured Image

Over the last decade, publications such as HBR have highlighted the steady decline of organisational agility. What was once a competitive advantage is now threatened by internal silos, slow communication loops, and teams attempting to “look agile” while still operating with waterfall habits. Agencies experience this most: pressured to deliver fast, but governed by outdated planning models that create more friction than momentum.

Introducing design methods into this environment often exposes hidden dysfunctions. Yet, when applied iteratively and consistently, design becomes a powerful mechanism for rebuilding internal capability. At scale, design borrows from psychology - much like elite sports teams do - to reduce pressure and improve performance. Christensen’s Innovator’s Dilemma reminds us that even successful companies can fail when they ignore emerging behaviours and cling to outdated delivery structures.

BOK — From Maturity to Agility

DaS™ helps organisations understand their true maturity and introduces simple exercises that shift teams toward agility long before they “become agile.” The Living Knowledgebase - the documentation of design decisions - plays a critical role. When teams across business, design, operations, and development contribute to the same evolving library, organisational agility becomes a natural consequence rather than an aspiration.

Today, with LLMs and automation compressing months of work into hours, the organisations that move from passive governance to active contribution will thrive. This places new expectations on design management - and reignites long-running debates in the design leadership community.
