The McKinsey Model

Featured Image

McKinsey turned creative intuition into operational discipline. Its Design Delivery Model brings design thinking into the heart of business performance - linking user insight, prototyping, and testing to measurable commercial outcomes.

The rhythm is simple: understand, ideate, prototype, test, refine. Each cycle begins with research that exposes unmet needs, followed by collaborative brainstorming that spans design, engineering, and strategy.

Prototypes appear early. Quick, functional, and disposable - so teams can learn cheaply and adapt fast. Continuous feedback closes the loop, ensuring ideas evolve with evidence, not assumptions.

Cross-functional teams work shoulder-to-shoulder, aligning creative ambition with operational and financial goals. This integration reduces waste, shortens time to market, and strengthens customer loyalty.

For McKinsey, design isn’t decoration; it’s a repeatable system of learning that turns empathy into efficiency.

The brilliance of the model lies in its precision. Creativity is treated as a process to be measured, improved, and scaled - never romanticised. By codifying design into a disciplined framework, McKinsey proved that innovation could be both human-centred and data-driven.

It’s design as continuous improvement: a system built not just to create, but to evolve.

Happy scaling through design!

Design at Scale™ is defined by three models, which form the Method. Each model operates in a different part of the business and collects and informs parties on design and engineering decisions that have a direct impact on the delivery.

All brands and trademarks presented on the Design at Scale™ website are owned by their relevant companies or agencies. The projects represent collaborations between designers, developers and product owners. Do not copy or publish any of the projects shown here without written approval from Design at Scale™ (alternatively GIVE™, 9V™) and/or relevant companies and agencies.
